What would you do if you were at the register buying an item and the person behind you handed you a coupon to save money off that item? I think most of the readers of these blog, would say "Thank you" and be on their merry way. Not the lady I met today.
I decided to stop by Walgreens on the way back from my son's swimming class. As I walked along the make up aisle I noticed that they had some Loreal Make Up on clearance. It was mostly foundations and fall color lipsticks making way to the summer colors. I was looking for a $0.40 filler to make my purchase over $10 so I could then use a $10 register reward from last week. I had a few $2 off any Loreal Make up coupons and after coupon the lip glosses were $0.29, so I grabbed two.
As I am waiting to be checked out I noticed the lady in front of me has some of the Loreal foundations that she's trying to buy. She is actually talking to the cashier because the item scanned for higher than what the price tag said. So obviously this person cares about saving money since she's being careful that her items get rung up at the right price. Since I had four coupons and was purchasing only two items I decided to offer her one of the coupons.
You would think I offered money to this lady, the look in her face and how profusely she declined the offer. She starts telling me how she really doesn't need the item and it's just money thrown away. I am thinking, well the more reason to use a coupon to feel less guilty about the splurge. She insisted on not taking the coupon, paid for her purchase and left saying her daughter was also a "coupon saver."
This just left me thinking: What is so wrong about using a coupon, that you would rather pay an extra $2 even when someone is handing you one? It's just a piece of paper to help you save money! It is not illegal.
Do you know someone who looks down on coupon users?

Too weird of her! "Oh, no thanks, I'd rather pay an extra $2. Because I'm too good for coupons."
Whenever I'm shopping and I see someone picking up an item for which I have a coupon handy, I give it to them. They probably think I'm nuts, but all of them have been grateful (I think).
I do this to help someone save a little bit of money, and to hopefully turn them on to using coupons in the future.
Someone recently told me I could have their catalina coupon... and it was for two free movie tickets!
One time I was in line at Target and the woman behind me said I had just as many coupons as her daughter... then when it was taking awhile to ring up, she got snotty and said, "If you're going to use that many coupons, you should just go to customer service."
Some people are nuts.
I will gladly give out a coupon to people if I don't need it. Most people are happy about it!
Before I was big on coupons like I am now, I had a lady give me a 40% off any item at Michaels because the item I was buying was more expensive than hers. I was really greatful because I always forget that coupon (or never got the paper).
I will gladly take anyones extras, so I don't know why some people get all weird about it!
Anyways...This is my first time to your blog so "nice to meet you"...I'm Jessica over at 20 Something Money!
Yea and you know what... those people that think they are too good for coupons are probably the same ones complaining about prices at the gas pump. What a joke.
What a jerk! I've heard of people being too busy to clip coupons, or forgetting to bring them. But not using one when it's handed to you on a silver platter? She must be a fruitcake.
Very strange!
I sometimes leave coupons near a product in the grocery store if I know I'm not going to use it (like diapers). I always hope someone else picks it up and uses it. Also, I've used coupons that other people have left for products I needed to buy. Does anyone else do this?
I also like to leave coupons behind for items I won't use. I believe that's part of coupon karma.
As far as this lady, just think it is stupid to want to pay full price for things. oh well! it' not my wallet.
My mother-in-law is actually like that. Maybe it is the generation? She is highly offended that I use coupons to save money. (she wouldn't even give me her inserts, out of embarrasment) For some reason she equates couponers with "white trash". That was until I started sharing my savings, then did her tune change!!!!! Now I am a princess and she brags about me to her friends and other daughters-in-law!!!!!
I also leave coupons near items in the store if I'm not going to use them. Especially if I know someone can get the items really cheap (or free) with my coupon.
That was a strange reaction to your offer...I would have gladly taken the coupons! :)
Yeah, it must be a generational thing and a mental association with being poor or something. PRide is such a horrible thing. You pay in more ways than one.
I love to share coupons with friends, other shoppers in the store, and leave them by products as well. You know what I hate is when the store employees treat you like you are stealing by using coupons. They get the money in the end...and they are printed in the stinking newspaper for a reason!
I think some people just have a hard time accepting something - anything - from a stranger (or from anyone). I don't get it, but I've seen it more than once. Personally, I think what you did was nice :)
@Kaki - LOL about your mother-in-law!
I never would have expected that type of reaction. I wish I had shoppers like you in line behind me all the time :) I never remember to bring my coupons, or I forget to clip them in the first place
